Dispensing Technician II & III

The aim of the certificate in dispensing technician (parts II and III) is to build upon the Diploma Technology course to help meet the demands of the industry.

The program offers the student the chance to acquire valuable pharmaceutical tools that will open a wide range of opportunities for productive work in the industry and also for further students.

General Aims

This program is designed to help student require the requisite skills to be able to:

  • Acquire knowledge skills and the right orientation towards patient-centered pharmaceutical services.
  • Assistant in manufacturing units of hospitals and industries.
  • Carry out basic quality control techniques in the hospital and industry.
  • Appreciate the relevance of the knowledge and skills acquired and how to use them to contribute effectively to society.
  • Appreciate the properties, handling, and storage of pharmaceutical materials and products.
  • Develop skills, abilities, attitude, and value including communication skills, analytical skills, critical thinking, social interaction, decision-making professionalism, and ethics that are necessary for the provision of pharmaceutical care.
  • Recognize hazards and adopt safety procedures.
  • Access use and communicate information to other professionals and the public.
  • Adequately understand pharmacy laws and regulations. Health policy and the public.
  • Analyze chemically physical and microbiologically the quality of pharmaceutical products.

Duration and Nature of the Program

The program is into two parts: PART II & PART III
Part II dispensing technician program involves four (4) semesters of tuition.
Students shall write an external examination organized by the technical examination unit of the Ghana educational service. A successful candidate who obtains a minimum of overall credit in the Dispensing Technician Part II examination shall be awarded Part II Dispensing Technician. A candidate will do compulsory one (1) year internship in pharmacy, hospital of manufacturing (food, water, beverage, cosmetics, herbal or pharmaceutical). Candidate in this category can enter the Dispensing Technician program III.

Part III of the dispensing technician program involves two (2) semesters of tuition. The student shall write an external examination organized by the technical examination unit.
A successful candidate who obtains a minimum of overall credit in the dispensing technician part III examination shall be awarded a part III dispensing technician.

Upon completion of either part II or part III program:

  1. The technician can work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in the pharmaceutical industry. A hospital or community pharmacy.
  2. The technician can work under the supervision of a qualified chemist or biochemist in any quality control laboratory.

After completion of Part III, a technician can enter the HND Dispensing program in the fifth semester.

Entry Qualification and Admission Requirement

Candidate for admission to the part II program must have satisfied the following requirement.

    • Senior secondary school certificate (SSSCE) applicant.
      • Passes in three (3) core subject (English, mathematics, and core science)
    • West African secondary school certificate (WASSCE) Applicant.
      • With a lest passes (D& or E8) in three (3) core subject (English, mathematics, and integrated science)
    • Mature applicants.
      • Applicants must have attained the age of 25years at the time of submitting the application form and must have either
      • The applicant must have obtained at least two years of hospital/laboratory/industrial work experience.
      • Or Dispensary Assistance from a recognised institution.
      • The applicant must have attained a medicine counter assistant certificate from the pharmacy council.
      • A shortlisted applicant must pass an interview.
      • Candidate for admission to part III program must have satisfied the following requirements.
  • Dispensing Technician Part II.
  • Completed one (1) year practical training.
